Storyboard Animatic
To start the unit we had to choose between 4 scripts, Blade Runner, Star Wars episode I, The abyss and the one I chose which was Stars Wars episode V the empire strikes back. I chose this script as I enjoyed the wording in the battle on Hoth about how as they're flying the horizon twists and the scene with the electrobinoculars i was reminded of and subsequently inspired by how Wes Anderson uses binoculars.
For the rest of my shots I was lucky to be able to imagine them quite easily and just alter some things to build tension and make it more interesting and dramatic, I mainly struggled with getting the idea I had in my head drawn. I would say my most successful shot were when I would keep the ship in the foreground still while moving the background around them.
One thing I'm finding difficult is the lack of human figures and movement as I can't use body language to show show emotions and dynamics, I tried showing the power General Veers has over the pilots in a walker by placing them in a triangle.
For the timing of the animatic I had to plan in where the dialogue was and keep that longer than the rest. I also had to time the shots of the ships moving to keep up the pace and make it look like they were moving.
