Character Design

We were given an image of a door in a castle and were given the task of creating a character that would live behind that door. My idea was to have the room behind the door be a room of wires and buttons that controls the entire technology of the whole castle and the character that lives in that room be a robot with a monitor head that’s a caretaker of this room however is unable to leave. When designing my character, I took inspiration from images I saw on Pinterest and Asimov's laws of robotics. The robot gets the majority of their personality from it being built to be charismatic but as time goes on and it has gained more consciousness it has started to find day-to-day life stuck in the room incredibly boring and depressing.  Below are my initial sketches of the character using masculine body shapes taking inspiration from game show hosts and using a 90’s CRT monitor for its head. I’m also trying out multiple different ways that their body could be made up using different shapes.

I then considered a more feminine shape of using a shift dress as the body for the robot and for it to make sense I changed the monitor head from a CRT monitor to a 60’s/70’s tv screen, which I preferred a lot more to the previous design. I then drew my preferred character in multiple positions and did a turn-around for them.

To make some characters more realistic and believable we looked into anatomy and did some practice drawings of human faces. I found this rather difficult as I had never drawn a realistic face from scratch before, but it was interesting learning how all the proportions work together.
